WASHROOM MAINTENANCE
The most common complaint in our system is washrooms that are dirty or out of supplies. Clean, sanitary washrooms are essential in a school building. Everyone uses the washrooms and no one should be expected to use a dirty washroom, especially a child. Engineers should assign the day custodian to make spot checks of the washrooms every hour to check for problems. Each custodian who is assigned to clean a washroom must be thoroughly trained and have the proper equipment to do the job

Quick Tips
Toilet bowl cleaner is a strong acid-based chemical that is designed to clean the inside of toilets and urinals. It will damage the surfaces of toilet seats, chrome, stainless steel, and floors. Discourage its use.
Do not use bleach in washrooms. It is very dangerous to occupants and surfaces. Ask the lunchroom manager not to give any to the custodians.
Do not use abrasive powder. It will scratch surfaces, removing the shine.
Supervision of Employees
The engineer-in-charge is responsible for the supervision of custodial workers both in-house and private. Each employee must have a clear idea of what is expected of them. In addition to a job description, each employee must be given a daily work schedule. Additional specific progressive cleaning work assignments should be given each day. Progressive discipline should be used with employees who fail to complete work assignments. Inform the Principal of all work schedules, sections, disciplinary actions, successes, etc. Communication, cooperation and planning are the keys to success.
