Winter Preparedness/Snow
Removal Action Plan
The goal of this action plan is to
provide safe walkways for students, staff, and neighbors; eliminate injuries; and provide
for the efficient evacuation of the school building the event of an emergency.
Employee Responsibilities
Engineer
- Monitors pending weather forecast and conditions of sidewalks and entrances.
- Keeps all snow removal equipment operational and ready to run.
- Maintains inventory of gasoline, salt, sand, shovels, etc.
- Determines scope of snow removal requirements.
- Trains custodial employees in the safe operation of power equipment.
- Notifies custodial employees of the need for snow removal.
- Supervises snow removal operations.
Custodial Employees
- Monitors weather forecasts and local news broadcasts for information on emergency school
closings.
- Arrive for work prepared to protect themselves from the dangers of winter. Wear hat,
gloves, boots, heavy coat, scarf, face mask, etc.
- Arrive at work at the time designated by the engineer.
- Be familiar with the safe operation of all mechanical snow equipment.
- Completes snow removal operations and elimination of ice and slush from all areas
designated by the engineer.
- Mops up all standing water in school building after entrance of students.
Scope of Work
- Clear all sidewalks, entrances, walkways, driveways, and parking lots of snow, slush,
and ice.
- Spread salt as required.
- All walkways, sidewalks, crosswalks, etc. shall be cleared to the full width.
- All exterior doors must be operational and exits unimpeded.
- All crosswalks are to be cleared out to the center of the street.
- All school bus drop-off zones are to be cleared.
- All sewer opening are to be cleared to allow for run-off of melting snow.
- All fire hydrants are to be cleared of snow accumulations.
- All downspouts are to be cleared of ice accumulations.
Employee Assignments
School days
Snow removal shall take precedence over all other custodial duties.
Custodial Workers shall remove snow and ice accumulations from all walkways prior to the
removal of the satff and students. If snowfall is continuous during the school day, snow
removal operations must be continuous.
Weekend and Holidays
At the discresion of the engineer, custodians will be called in to perform
snow removal operations on the weekends and holidays at the time designated by the
engineer.
Emergency School Closings
On days that the Chicago Public
Schools are officially closed due to a weather emergency, all custodial personnel shall
report to work at 7:00 A.M. ready for duty as directed by the engineer.
